Neflix and Drill - How Dumb are you? (Not Dumb enough probably)
OK so Netflix is worth $520,990,000,000 Dollars
Netflix’s 2024 revenue was $39,001,000,000. Dollars
Basic math says that even if every cent went to shareholders for 13 years its still wouldn’t be worth that much – and that’s imagining no licencing costs, running costs or production costs, staff, lawyers.
Let’s face it, Netflix is nothing special, IP wise, the shows and movies mostly belong to other people and there are many services like it now. I know I used that argument about Facebook a decade ago and its now worth god knows how much, I assumed Facebook would go the way of beebo and my space.
It means however that like everything else I don’t invest in because its dumb I’m loosing out. Bitcoin is worthless – but people keep buying it. I swear I’m just not dumb enough to live in the universe of dumb people who’ll overpay for stuff.
Now Netflix appears to be MASSSIVELY profitable seemingly about 50% but still that a lot of years for folks to get their money back. Obviously some people didn’t’ pay that much for their shares, and in future more dumb, or in reality smart people who can't count, may pay more for it but some point someone is going to have to pay what owed – by paying more for a shitter service. Err… with added AI slop. And more adds. Or the investors are going to loose their shirts. Yes I know I said a decade ago that 'Facebook wasn’t worth shit' but by constantly degrading their product and introducing more and more adds and shit they‘re still going strong and now adding AI slop. So that’s probably what Netflix will do.
If Netflix is really making $20 B in Profit then, well, you’re already over paying. No I haven’t checked these numbers, no I haven’t run this calc on the other streaming services I heard they (and Netflix) were in trouble.
(This may or may not be followed up with my musings on how much of the internet that we pay for is utterly pointless traffic – adds, VPNs etc. Streaming the same stuff over and over)
Just remember – whoever is running Netflix is going to be raking a big slice off that $20 B pie and has been for a while now. Big enough that they’re not the least bit bothered what happens in a couple of years time to the investors or the subscribers.
